Concept Statement

The intensity and complexity of daily life in a contemporary world has caused us to become incredibly reliant upon snap decisions. We are increasingly becoming pre-programmed to never fully exercise the process of deep thought. It is somewhat because of this that we immediately see the natural world and the built environment as completely separate and unrelated entities. By looking at the eradication of the natural environment in order to develop the built, we can begin to recognise that this substitution of industrial growth is indirectly derived from a subconscious understand of nature. Therefore, by generating shapes and forms which are organic, spaces can become structural representations of nature, visually demonstrating the relationship our surr...oundings have with each other.

This insulation is derived from the stark contrast between the organic growth of Kangaroo Point cliffs and the materiality/power of the Story Bridge. The design is aimed to illustrate a unique sense of growth in a completely urban and artificial environment, to demonstrate that the city itself is in-fact a living and breathing organism. The folie is a space of meaning and intent, with the encouragement of personal contemplation, pushing the boundaries of an occupiable space into a place of value, connection and sensory enlightenment.

Human beings can learn efficiently by observation, taking instruction, and imitating the behaviour of others. By challenging pre-conceived ideas of learning and breaking up act of everyday life, we can recondition and passively teach occupants to embark upon a self directed exploration of manipulating information mentally. Just like we improve our balance by learning to ride a bike or our fitness by going to the gym, we can improve our capacity to enter deep thought by activating spaces that evoke surrealistic meditation on any type of level. In using organic forms and representations of nature, the Folie can influence the reflection of growth and integration of our surrounds, yet ultimately what someone learns from the experience is impenetrable to the design. Lessons can be taught but what is taken away is unique.
